Prof. Naoki Ono received the B.S., M.S. and D.Eng. degrees in mechanical engineering from the University of Tokyo in 1985, 1987 and 1998, respectively. From 1987 to 2002, he was with Mitsubishi Materials Corp., Japan, and from 2003 to 2005, was with SUMCO Corp., Japan, as a research engineer. In those companies his research topic was heat and mass transfer analysis of crystal growth process of semiconductor silicon including Marangoni effect. In 2005, he joined the faculty of the department of engineering science and mechanics, Shibaura Institute of Technology, Tokyo, Japan, as an associate professor. He has been a professor since 2010. His current research is in heat and mass transfer in mini/micro channels, surface tension effects and boiling in mini/micro systems, micromixing, and cooling technology in practical thermal systems.

Abstract:

As the development of micro machine and nanotechnology advances, thermofluid engineering in mini or micro scale is also making progress these days. At the same time, practical merits from the application of those technologies are expected from the society. Some of the specific characteristics of thermal and fluid flow phenomena in mini/micro scale are in the following.

1) Surface area per unit volume of the fluid is so large that the surface phenomena can affect the entire fluid.

2)Gradient of physical quantity (temperature, concentration, velocity etc.) can be set extremely high if it is well controlled in the mini/micro region.

Therefore, somewhat minor phenomena in normal scale can be emphasized and employed in useful mini/micro thermofluid systems.

The speaker will introduce some application examples in which Marangoni effect or Soret effect is utilized in the experiments as follows.

1.Micro mixing flow by utilizing Marangoni convection in micro channel.

2.Gas separation device with continuous micro structure utilizing Soret effect.

3.Observation of vaper flow in small heat pipe by PIV technique.
